Disasters, faulty manufacturing, and engineering failings occasionally show us how human life is cheap. We bear these calamities in our minds, and we prioritize the value of human life in every business we carry out.
The quake which took place towards the morning of August 17th is one of the biggest tragedies of the late history. Because of inefficient legal regulations and supervisions, nearly 50 thousand people were dead according to unofficial sources. 133.683 buildings collapsed and 600.000 people ended up homeless.
Known as “Pamukova Train Disaster” in public opinion happened on July 22nd, 2004. Old trains were operated far faster than they should on old rails without efficient infrastructure regulations. This negligence resulted with a calamity and the death of 41 passengers. According to official reports, Turkish State Railways and secretary of transportation were guilty yet neither was trialed.
At least 521 people died and more than 12 thousand people were injured due to the tsunami triggered by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, which occurred 35 kilometers below the surface. Taking homes of 800 thousand people, this earthquake affected 1.8 million people and caused more than 30 million dollar damage.
Two explosions occurred with a 9- hour interval on February 3rd, 2011. The first explosion resulted from an oxygen cylinder and the second one resulted from a thinner tank. 17 workers died painfully. Approximately 40 people were injured. Just like at every turn, it was said that “necessary precautions had been taken” and the accident was “predestined”.
On October 10th, 2011, while walking on an alley, Hasan Küsmüş was hit by a marble which fell from the roof of a building and died tragically. For buildings to have modification license is seen as a luxury, leave alone having earthquake hazard analysis.
On March 12th, 2013, a fire broke out in a mall building site. 11 workers died in the fire resulted from an electric heater in the tent they slept. It was rumored that no necessary precaution were taken and insurance registers of the workers were mad after the fire; however, no one was put on trial. Moreover, the chief executor of the construction was awarded afterwards.
